At a press conference in Sweden, President Obama affirms solidarity with Russian LGBT people.
President Barack Obama reiterated his support for LGBT people living in Russia under the country’s so-called LGBT propaganda law during a joint press conference in Stockholm with Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt Wednesday. As a precursor to the impending G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, the two leaders spoke about equality, among other issues.
“We share a belief in the dignity and equality of every human being. .. that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters must be treated equally under the law. That our societies are strengthened and not weakened by diversity,” President Obama told reporters.
Wednesday’s was the first bilateral visit by a U.S. president to Sweden, according toThe White House Blog. In addition to attending the G-20 summit, President Obamaplans to meetwith Russian gay rights activists while in St. Petersburg.
