A report from the round table entitled Presentation of the Model law on Gender Identity

The Model Law on gender identity was presented on Tuesday 19th November, at the round table organised by Gayten-LGBT, Center for the promotion of LGBTIQ human rights, on the premises of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Serbia in Belgrade.

The Model Law is the result of mutual endeavors of a number of Gayten-LGBT members, legal experts, trans activists and trans people themselves.

The speakers at the round table on the Model Law included experts from the field of law, medicine, anthropology and human rights, state institutions’ representatives, trans* activists and trans* people. The round table participants came from government institutions, domestic and international institutions, and non-governmental human rights organisations. A special kind of support, in terms of a letter of support, was provided by the organisation TransGender Europe, the largest European organisation when it comes to trans* rights.

At the closing of the round table it was concluded that the Model Law on gender identity represents a considerable contribution to the improvement of the rights and the position of trans* people, both in medical and legal spheres (including the prohibition of forced sterilization). Additionally, it speeds up and facilitates administrative processes of documents’ change, protects from discrimination and guarantees trans* people the rights and obligations in terms of work, employment, insurance and property, marital and family status.
